Indonesia is currently in the process of negotiating a Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) with the European Union. The aim of the agreement is to enhance market access and increase trade and investment between the two parties. International Economics Consulting Ltd. (IEC) provided practical training on trade negotiations to the Ministry of Trade in Indonesia through the ARISE Plus-Indonesia programme. The training covered core areas such as tariffs and non-tariff measures (SPS, TBT, trade remedies, and trade facilitation); specific services sectors; and other trade-related concerns.

The Project at A Glance
Our Strategy and Impact
As part of this assignment, the team at International Economics Consulting aimed to strengthen the capacity of Indonesia’s negotiating team to prepare and conduct trade negotiations, especially in the context of the Indonesia-EU CEPA. In particular, the assignment comprised the:
(i)Consolidation of knowledge and skills obtained through previous training courses conducted on trade negotiation for MoT’s negotiating team in 2019 and 2020
(ii)Sharpening of training skills of the group of MoT trainers
In this context, the training programme featured:
- A short course where participants would be able to refresh their course learnings and strengthen their knowledge where needed; and
- Simulated negotiation sessions based on case studies
Given the importance of ensuring that trade promotes gender equality, gender mainstreaming was an important aspect of the training provided.
