National Export Strategy of Myanmar

The Project at A Glance

Myanmar is undergoing rapid political and economic reforms with a view towards greater economic and social prosperity and the National Export Strategy (NES) is viewed as an important step towards improving the country’s export competitiveness, through providing a roadmap to address supply-side, business environment, market entry, and developmental constraints in Myanmar.
International Economics has conducted trade analytics and diagnostic assessment for the definition of a National Export Strategy (NES) for Myanmar on behalf of the International Trade Centre (ITC).

What We Found

A comprehensive scope in export strategy design is needed to both address essential market-based activities and also respond to challenges of competitiveness that exist at the domestic and international levels. ITC’s Export Strategy section has been providing its support to Myanmar in implementing the design of Myanmar’s NES.The specific role of our Team was to provide a support to ITC Export Strategy advisers by facilitating sector and cross-sector strategy design, as well as supporting the overall NES design process. The main outputs under this engagement included, delivering inputs for NES consultation, facilitating workshops for NES consultation, and gathering outputs for elaboration of sector strategies.

Our Strategy and Impact

Our team provided a combination of advisory and capacity-building inputs, and specialized expertise to ensure the final NES document is of the highest quality and validated by the relevant authorities in Myanmar.A key step in the NES process was identification of targeted export sectors and associated needs and priorities based on technical analysis and consultations. Ultimately, this information guided the design of sectoral and cross-sector strategies, complete with action plans. These needs and priorities fed into the final NES document which ultimately provides targeted recommendations for market development and capacity building for each of the selected priority sectors and cross-sectors.
