Design of a National Export Strategy (NES) for Mauritius

The Project at A Glance

Mauritius’s path of economic transformation has been nothing short of remarkable. However, economic growth appears to be plateauing and the Mauritian economy is facing several challenges. The future of the export growth lies in Mauritius’ ability to develop a decisive competitive edge while moving up the value added ladder, such as a comprehensive National Export Strategy (NES). International Economics, through its CEO, supported the diagnostic process, consultations and elaboration of the documents comprising the NES for Mauritius.

What We Found

Export growth in Mauritius was expected to pick up on the back of growing demand in European and US markets, but Mauritian manufacturers will soon be exposed to stronger competition and innovative and ambitious strategies are now needed to maintain this diversification and drive increasing global market shares. Our team, supported the ITC in the design of a National Export Strategy, composed of a national and a series of sector and cross-sector strategies builds a comprehensive framework for building Mauritius’s productive capacity over five years, in order to secure a positive outlook for securing growth and pursuing an aggressive campaign for sustainable market penetration in traditional and new markets.

Our Strategy and Impact

The aim of this project was to design and draft of the main NES document and the strategy for internationalisation of Mauritian SMEs in the global economy. In particular, the work included value chain analyses, strategic opportunities analysis, and technical drafting for select sectors. After a thorough research, analysis and cross-sector team consultations on SME integration, the Team drafted the main NES document. The NEs identifies a number of competitiveness constraints affecting the supply side, business environment, market entry and the development side of the export value chain. The NES also includes cross-sector functional strategies aimed at strengthening the business environment for enterprises and exporters
