Seminar “Assessment of Economic, Social and Environmental Impacts of a Free Trade Agreement Between Vietnam and the EU

MARCH 2014
Staff of International Economics has worked in collaboration with other academic and practitioners in the preparation of a Sustainable Impact Assessment (SIA) of a future free trade agreement between the EU and Vietnam. The preliminary report of the study, prepared by a team of 16 experts who are led by International Economics’ Director, Paul Baker, confirms that while the study shows that the FTA will bring substantial benefits to both parties, potentially driving investments and reducing poverty, there are necessary flanking policies required to ensure a balanced outcome from the agreement. The three seminars to present the key findings for this preliminary report took place on 3rd March in Danang, on 5th March in Ho Chi Minh city and on 7th March in Hanoi. The events gathered around 400 participants, representing the local Business Community as well as Foreign Diplomatic Agencies, including European Union Officials and other International Agencies. You can find the Summary Report “A Sustainability Impact Assessment of a Free Trade Agreement between the EU and Vietnam” for download and more information on this project at the EU-MUTRAP Project’s website at http://www.mutrap.org.vn.
